ATILII' MAUSOLEUM

AQUEDUCT

MAUSOLEUM OF THE SINAGOGA

FORUM

SARCOPHAGUS OF CASTILISCAR

The archaeological site made up of the aqueduct, the thermae and the forum of the Bañales is located in the region of the Cinco Villas (the Five Towns), exactly in the township of Uncastillo; however, the site is not near this village, but near the small village of Layana, close to Sadaba. It is situated in the valley of the Bañales from Sadaba to Puy Foradado.  The recent researches identify the roman site with a romanized ancient Basque town called Tarraca, near to the ancient Segia (nowadays Ejea de los Caballeros), according to the classical sources (Pliny, Natural History III 3,24, Ptolomaeus of Alexandria, Geography, and the Anonymus of Ravenna); the civitas of Tarraca is located in the Roman way between Caesar Augusta (now Zaragoza) and Pompaelo (now Pamplona).

This enclave, that seems to respond to a completely romanized area, must have been a centralizer nucleus, according to the scattered way of life in this region; it must have been a centre of expansion for a local landowner oligarchy, as the Atilii, and a spreader centre of the agricultural local economy, according to the large number of villae during the Late Empire.  Its forum should make easy the economical transactions in the region and its thermae not only should make ease the hygiene of its inhabitants, but they should be a meeting point for all the inhabitants around the region.

The hill of the “Pueyo” should lodge a romanized indigenous city and in the plain it should be a monumental area, with an honorific arch –that Juan Bautista Labanha saw and documented in the XVII century-, a forum, a temple, an acropolis, a necropolis, an aqueduct, public thermae and regularly floored streets, etc.  This archaeological complex should be dated in the second half of the I century a. C. and it should be left in the III century.
